Y-PLAN China Public Service Leadership Studio
Spirit of Berkeley
New partners in China working largely in higher education, brought sixty-two Chinese university students to UC Berkeley to work with Global Seed and CC+S to grow their public service leadership skills. The program had two-components – the Y-PLAN Leadership Studio and Community Immersion. In the former, participants were challenged to confront civic issues in the Bay Area to prepare them to do the same for their home communities.

The Community Immersion experience, led by Global Seed, connected students to Youth UpRising, a local nonprofit focused on fostering the leadership ability and power of young people in East Oakland and other local community organizations. Students overwhelmingly enjoyed the program, with many reporting that they “wish we had more time to delve more deeply into the community development work, in the Bay Area communities and in preparation for what we hope to do at back home.”
